John DiPaolo
NEW PAINTINGS
February 7 - March 1, 2008
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 7, 5:30-7:30 PM
DiPaolo Continues to create a weightless suspension of massive organic forms; thick surfaces coupled with thin veils of paint. The two approaches combine and offer the viewer an intensified sense of space, light, and movement. Those interested in explosive and confident paintings will find themselves intrigued by DiPaolo’s energetic and provocative work.
“For the past thirty years, John DiPaolo has painted lush non-representational canvases in his San Francisco studio, driven by a passion ignited when he was a young child. An accomplished draftsman capable of rendering with verisimilitude, he worked in a hard-edged Pop style until graduate school before abandoning references to the outside world in favor of a deeper engagement with the act of painting. Since then DiPaolo has created a body of work drawn from his inner resources. Dipping beneath surface appearances, he taps into a creative force strong enough to compel him to return to his studio day after day, filled with anticipation for the aesthetic adventures that lie ahead. …Having worked steadily over the decades, seldom cast into the limelight, he has compiled an impressive body of work. The optimism and persistence with which he approaches his work is made possible by his ability to tap into a vein of pure, unfettered creativity”
