About

Dolby Chadwick Gallery was founded with a clear and unwavering vision: to create a community of artists and art lovers, to celebrate the free exchange of ideas, and to advance artistic excellence. Since its inception in 1997, the gallery has built an international roster of artists who create exceptional work that is articulate, visceral, and provocative.

In over 280 beautifully curated exhibitions, Dolby Chadwick Gallery has featured art in traditional and hybrid media, including oil painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and photography. The gallery embraces a wide range of subject matters and styles—from photorealism to abstraction—as many of its artists seek to explore visual perception in a way that welcomes new possibilities of both sight and insight. At the core of the program is always the experience, in Jackson Pollock’s words, of coming face to face with yourself.

Over the last ten years, Dolby Chadwick Gallery has emerged as a groundbreaking force at the intersection of visual art and poetry. It has published over 40 art books and monographs (several of them award-winning) as well as books featuring powerful collaborations between visual artists and poets. In 2021, the book project “Stay Inspired” earned the title of Best Independently Published Poetry Book in the nation.

Dolby Chadwick Gallery’s first home was in a cubicle of a prestigious San Francisco architectural firm. Twenty-eight years later, the gallery has a gorgeous 6,000 square-foot, light-filled exhibition space in a historic building in the heart of San Francisco. With her trademark tenacity and a boundless passion for the arts, coupled with fervent supporters, a dedicated team, and talented artists, Lisa Dolby Chadwick created the thriving and engaged organization that the gallery is today.

Over the last three decades, the exhibitions and artists have consistently received outstanding critical and curatorial attention. Dolby Chadwick has co-organized shows with chief curators from the de Young Museum and collaborated with major institutions in the art world, such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Through it all, creating an artist and collector community that transforms lives is at the heart and spirit of the gallery’s mission. As Picasso once said, “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

“My goal has always been to show art that causes a visceral reaction and opens a doorway into something else,” says Lisa Dolby Chadwick. “When art does that, it elevates not just a room but the lives of the people who get to experience it.”
