Dan Jackson
NEW PAINTINGS
December 7, 2006 - January 27, 2007
Opening Reception: Thursday, December 7, 5:30-7:30 PM
Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of new paintings by Dan Jackson. Jackson’s detailed paintings, portrayed in a naturalistic style, are deceptively simple yet remain true to the subject. The formal sensibility of these unexpectedly found and household objects convey the sly, humorous side of the artist.
Painting in oil and using multiple glazes, Jackson’s style and technique result in luminescent images in a manner similar to the Dutch Masters while keeping with contemporary aesthetic. Jackson’s painting is both minimal and refined, not only dealing with simple spaces but also large shapes of color. Rather than building complicated compositions or using bravura brushwork to elevate the stature of the objects he prefers to understate and present without fanfare.
With an almost uncanny attention to realism, he does not eliminate the flaws in the objects and is thus able to capture the fragility of his subject and comment on the transitory nature of life. Through Jackson’s master of subtle changes of light and color, he successfully creates another world in his intricate depiction of everyday objects.
Dan Jackson received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Virginia Commonwealth University. Jackson has been included twice in New American Paintings. This is the first exhibition for Dan Jackson at the Dolby Chadwick Gallery.
