Jennifer Pochinski | The Worshippers, 2020 | Oil on canvas | 60 x 72 inches
On the heels of SFMOMA's revelatory David Park retrospective and Berggruen's Diebenkorn show, comes this robust collection of recent oil paintings that combine bold color with forceful gesture, forming figures out of abstraction. Inspired by he Hawaiian childhood, many of Pochinski's paintings feature brightly lit figures wading into water or baking on the sand. But these paintings are really all about paint, thick splotches of deep red, day-glo green, and blinding blue. Characters emerge and vibrate, becoming subjects for a moment inside energetic fields of color.
