Dolby Chadwick Gallery is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Gonzalo Fuenmayor’s Tropicalypse by the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) for their permanent collection.
Tropicalypse portrays an imaginary apocalyptic landscape of burning palm trees; a gesture alluding to the palm tree as an archetype of “tropical culture” in America. Assertively and endowed with an infinite tropical imagination, Fuenmayor creates post-earthly spaces, entropic tropics that burst in and permeate these enormous, dreamlike, subliminal images that allude to the fragility of the balance that rules over all things, perpetuating in this manner a new icon of the exotic/tropical concept in our subconscious.
About the artist
Gonzalo Fuenmayor (b. 1977, Barranquilla, Colombia) is a Miami-based artist working primarily with drawing. Fuenmayor has been concerned about the effects of modernization and progress not only on natural environments, but mostly on Latin American culture and its ways of being displayed internationally through stereotypes and common places. His aim seems to be not exclusively, to denounce banalization but also to understand its aesthetic mechanisms and cultural power. Fuenmayor has received numerous awards, including the Ellies Creator Award in 2018; the Harpo Foundation Award in 2018; the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists in 2015; Traveling Fellowship by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2014; among others. He has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in USA, Latin America and Europe. His work was recently showcased in the Florida Prize 2018, Orlando Museum of Art; the solo exhibition Tropical Mythologies at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2015; Caribbean Crossroads exhibition at the Queens Museum, New York; as well as recent solo shows at Dolby Chadwick Gallery and Fernando Pradilla Gallery, in 2019. He is a current resident at Oolite Arts Residency in Miami and will be having his upcoming solo show, Palindromes at Dot Fiftyone Gallery in November 2020.
