Alex Kanevsky

Fin de Siècle
October 30 — December 1, 2018
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 3, 3:00-5:00 PM

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce Alex Kanevsky’s new show Fin de Siécle. Kanevsky is adamant that paintings can never be described by words because their language is fundamentally visual and not verbal. To him, paintings are not expressions of pre-conceived notions, ideas, or even thought processes; in fact, he believes that they resist any conceptualization—but what then is Kanevsky’s work about? If it is neither representational nor narrative nor symbolic, what is it that drives his vision?… read more

Matt Gonzalez

Derivations in Color
October 4 — 27, 2018

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is proud to present Matt Gonzalez’s new show Derivations in Color. Gonzalez’s collages are meditations on the nature of equilibrium. They create a balance between the ‘feeling and the syntax of things’ (to quote E.E.Cummings), between our sensuous, emotive experience of the world and the rational interpretation of it. Geometrical lines and figures form highly structured compositions that are so complex and self-contained that they look like living systems. But each of them is also suffused with a sumptuous color that exudes a nearly religious depth and simplicity. Balancing the two, Gonzalez creates an aesthetic equilibrium from which a subtle glow seems to emanate—like bioluminescence from a still, silent sea.… read more

Elizabeth Fox

My Darling Clouds
August 30 — September 29, 2018

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is delighted to present Elizabeth Fox’s My Darling Clouds. Fox’s paintings are siren songs that live in a sphere somewhere between the subconscious and the magical. Her figures are often pale, ghostly, smoke & mirror, more shape than body. The world they move through is one that’s at once mundane—an office, a bus stop, a street with trash cans—and surreal: it’s as if Fox is squeezing the real out of reality, and what’s left is an etherealized version of strange, dream-like beauty.… read more

Chris Cosnowski

Might and Main
August 30 — September 29, 2018

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is delighted to present Chris Cosnowski’s Might and Main. Cosnowski continues his exploration of the conflicted soul of our pop culture. His toys, trophies, models and other Americana transport us into a world that’s both playful and haunting, sacred and silly, minimal and complex. In Might and Main, a phrase from the 12th century meaning with as much effort or strength as one can muster, many of Cosnowski’s figures are raising their fists in a gesture that speaks equally of assertion and desperation. A gesture that perfectly encapsulates our current situation.… read more

Jenifer Kent, Matt R. Phillips, Matthew Scheatzle

In the Aggregate
July 10 — August 25, 2018

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce "In the Aggregate," a group exhibition featuring the art of Jenifer Kent, Matt R. Phillips, and Matthew Scheatzle, on view July 14 to August 25, 2018. Though the three artists create vastly different works, they are united by practices that privilege iteration, fragmentation, and an aesthetic of multiplication, in which component parts unfurl to form a whole.… read more

Edwige Fouvry

Entrevoir
June 5 — July 7, 2018

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce Entrevoir, an exhibition of new work by Edwige Fouvry, on view from June 9 to July 7. Fouvry’s paintings are exercises in locating order in chaos. She takes the disarray of our shared worlds and daily lives and examines and rearranges it, seeking harmony and coherence without falling prey to overly neat or artificial resolutions. Making deft choices of color, form, and gesture, she sets abstraction against representation, painted against raw canvas, line against wash, dry against dripping brushwork, and loose gestures against tightly rendered eddies of swirling marks. This visual tension, however, is perfectly calibrated, creating a type of pressure that supports rather than wrenches apart. By drawing the eye in and carefully guiding it around a given scene, Fouvry allows the viewer to apprehend relationships, patterns, and moments of beauty that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.… read more

Jaq Chartier

In Solution
May 1 — June 2, 2018

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce In Solution, an exhibition of new work by Jaq Chartier, on view from May 5 to June 2. Chartier’s works engage the materiality of her chosen media, highlighting the dynamic and extraordinary properties of different inks, dyes and stains, spray paints, and acrylic resins, as well as the often surprising ways they interact with one another.… read more

Kai Samuels-Davis

The Shadows
April 5 — 28, 2018

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce The Shadows, an exhibition of new work by Kai Samuels-Davis. All of Samuels-Davis’s paintings are born of a long creative process. Some take years to complete as he reworks marks and rethinks colors in a struggle for balance and harmony. The constant negotiation of a distinct emotional pitch—a task profoundly impacted by Samuels-Davis’s changing life circumstances—also defines his process. As the layers of paint and personal history build, so too does a sense of depth and dimensionality, lending a mystery to the works that precludes simple or linear readings.… read more

Guy Diehl

Art About Art: A Luminous Pursuit
March 1 — 31, 2018

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce Art about Art: A Luminous Pursuit, an exhibition of new work by Guy Diehl on view March 1–31. As art about art, Diehl’s paintings explore different artistic movements across recent history, often by referencing other artists within the composition itself. The still-life format, a rich tradition in its own right, allows Diehl to set up relationships between art historical references and carefully chosen everyday objects, encouraging viewers to draw their own connections and conclusions.… read more

Udo Nöger

The Inside of Light
February 1 — 24, 2018

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce “The Inside of Light,” an exhibition of new work by Udo Nöger, on view from February 1 to 24. Nöger’s singular practice is predicated on the use of ambient light, which he harnesses and reworks to create his ethereal, monochromatic mixed-media artworks. In his quest for nuanced artistic results that upend traditional approaches to art-making, he spotlights light as a medium in and of itself.… read more
